Manager of Operations

JOB SUMMARY: The Manager of Operations leads the high-volume secondary market lifecycle by overseeing the strategic integration of post-retail salvage, outlet store sales, centralized production, and logistics. This role is responsible for maximizing revenue from unsold goods through efficient commodity streams and high-turnover outlet environments while managing a complex transportation network and warehouse hub. By optimizing "cost-per-touch" and streamlining processing workflows, the Manager ensures that inventory flows seamlessly from retail backrooms to its highest-value destination, balancing rigorous operational KPIs with a commitment to organizational sustainability and safety.

DIRECT REPORTS: Assistant Manager of Operations 

INDIRECT REPORTS: Shift Leads of Outlet and Logistics, Cashiers, Forklift Drivers, Drivers, and Material handlers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan, organize, and track the transportation fleet to optimize the movement of goods between the Centralized Processing Center (CPC) and all GCO locations, minimizing "empty miles." 
  • Oversee the daily operations of the CPC, ensuring high-volume sorting, grading, and pricing workflows meet established production standards. 
  • Monitor and report on key CPC performance metrics, including pieces-per-hour (PPH), yield targets, and cost-per-touch, to identify and resolve production variances. 
  • Direct the sorting of salvage and CPC-processed donations to minimize waste and maximize resource recovery, ensuring all recycling programs meet strict quality standards. 
  • Recruit, train, and supervise a multi-disciplinary team, including CPC production staff and professional drivers, to meet both federal safety standards and agency service levels. 
  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all centralized production workflows, including textile baling, tipper operations, and automated processing technology. 
  • Maintain total oversight of CPC and warehouse organization, cleanliness, and security, including opening/closing procedures and asset protection. 
  • Lead a "Safety First" culture by conducting safety meetings and ensuring all CPC The ability to visualize the entire lifecycle of a donation—from the donor’s car to the sales floor or the salvage trailer—and identify bottlenecks.
  • Skilled at shifting labor and equipment in real-time between production, transportation, and retail to meet fluctuating inventory volumes.
  • Goes beyond "compliance" to build a culture where safety is a shared value, ensuring rigorous adherence to D.O.T., OSHA, and internal GCO standards.
  • The instinct to identify and correct mechanical or behavioral risks before they result in injury or equipment failure.
  • A disciplined approach to managing budgets, with a focus on labor efficiency and maximizing the "cents-per-pound" recovery of salvage goods.
  • The ability to interpret warehouse metrics and transportation logs to make informed investments in fleet maintenance or production technology.
  • The ability to lead a diverse, multi-disciplinary team (drivers, sorters, and retail clerks), fostering a sense of purpose across different work environments.
  • Acts as a composed, final point of escalation for employee relations and customer concerns, ensuring outcomes align with organizational values.
  • Thrives in a high-variability environment where equipment breakdowns, weather delays, or unexpected donation surges require immediate, calm intervention.
  • Effectively leads the team through shifts in the secondary commodities market or new technology implementations.
  • Processing equipment (conveyors, tippers, balers) is certified and operated safely. 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Operations Manager or executive leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED. Associate’s degree or completion of management course work is preferred.  
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing complex operations, specifically involving warehouse management, transportation, and multi-unit retail/outlet environments.
  • Proven experience managing a transportation fleet, including deep familiarity with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge of dispatching software and route optimization.
  • Practical knowledge of warehouse equipment operations, including forklifts, vertical/horizontal bailers, and tippers.
  • Strong ability to read and manage a Profit & Loss (P&L) statement, develop budgets, and perform cost-benefit analyses for labor and equipment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a D.O.T. Medical Examiner’s Certificate. (A Class A CDL is a significant plus).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Deep understanding of D.O.T. regulations, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) standards, and electronic logging device (ELD) requirements.
  • Mastery of "Inbound to Outbound" workflows, including centralized production, grading/sorting standards, and inventory dwell-time management.
  • Knowledge of the salvage and commodities market, specifically the valuation and recycling streams for textiles, e-waste, and hard goods.
  • Understanding of high-volume outlet retail strategies, including "bin" rotation, floor density, and loss prevention.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety protocols for industrial equipment (balers, forklifts, tippers).
  • Skilled in interpreting financial statements, managing labor budgets, and identifying costsaving opportunities in transportation and production.
  • Ability to optimize complex routing and scheduling to ensure zero "deadhead" miles and maximum fleet utilization.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic fleet or warehouse equipment issues and manage preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Proficient in using operational data (cost-per-touch, yield-per-ton) to drive continuous improvement (Lean/Six Sigma).
  • Expert in hiring, training, and mentoring a diverse workforce across multiple departments.
  • The ability to pivot quickly between a corporate office setting, a fast-paced retail floor, and a rugged warehouse/dock environment.
  • The ability to see how a decision in the transportation department impacts the "freshness" of the Outlet store or the efficiency of the production hub.
  • Staying calm and decisive during fleet breakdowns, peak donation surges, or safety incidents.
  • A natural inclination toward the organization’s mission, ensuring that every donated item is handled with respect and maximized for community impact.
  • The ability to mediate high-stakes escalations involving customers, drivers, or warehouse personnel with diplomacy and firmness.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The work is physical and requires the following activities: Sanding, walking, twisting, bending, grabbing, reaching and driving for long periods of time; occasional squatting, kneeling, stooping, good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking, hearing, and visual acuity.  
  • The ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.  
  • Must be able to maneuver 200 pounds, pull utility crats, on wheels on and off trucks.  
  • Employees are required to operate a computer, and handle textiles, and donated goods.
  • This is considered a safety sensitive position. No level of impairment from drugs, alcohol, or prescription medications will be acceptable while performing the essential functions of this job.   

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in warehouse environment most of time and will be exposed to airborne particles such as dust, mold, dirt and pollen as well as extreme heat and cold.
  • Must be available to work during operating hours as needed for business operations. Work schedule may include days, evenings, weekends, holidays and may vary from week to week as well as occasional overtime when approved by management.
  • Moderate-high noise level.
  • Works 40 hours per week or more when required.
